Our Conversation event with Genevieve

We were very pleased to welcome 56 members and guests to our first Conversation event – a talk about Savvy Giving with the marvellous Genevieve Timmons. In her inimitable style Genevieve had the attendees fully engaged and they had some terrific questions – always a good sign.

Next we heard from Janine Regan with information about Playgroup Victoria’s work in meeting the needs of women and their pre-schoolers who are unable to join community playgroup sessions. These outreach programs need ongoing funding and provide inspiring examples of programs MWF may choose to support.

Thanks to EY for hosting us in their CBD function space with marvellous views of Melbourne. Thanks also to Alan Schwartz the new Council President of Philanthropy Australia for giving us his support by attending as Eve Mahlab’s guest.

Melbourne Women’s Fund was one of the 10 Giving Circles included in Generosity’s series of articles profiling Giving Circles in their last issue at www.generositymag.com.au

We were fortunate that the magazine’s Editor Sam Gibbs interviewed Jan Hirst, Gillian and Pat for a profile piece named “Watch out Melbourne, the women are circling”, which spoke about our recent launch, Colleen Willoughby’s (our Founding Patron) wise words, Susan Alberti’s donation and how MWF is part of a growing giving movement in Australia.

It is interesting to read about the variety of giving circles that currently exist which include our friends at Impact100 Melbourne, Women and Change (Brisbane), Kids in Philanthropy and The Awesome Foundation.

MEMBERS AND FRIENDS End of Year Celebration Event

Dinner ‘Danish style’ at Dansk – Tuesday 9 December

We are delighted to inform you about our upcoming end of year celebration. It will be a great time to socialise, meet with members and friends and enjoy a delicious a la carte dinner at our secret location – Dansk Restaurant in Denmark House on Little Bourke St. Why secret? Well not many people know about this little piece of Denmark in the city and that it is also the home of the Melbourne’s Danish Club, which is 125 years old!

The cost is $75.00 which includes a 3 course meal and a celebratory drink on arrival. Bookings are now open through Eventbrite. As we are limited to 65 guests we suggest that you book your place as soon as possible.

Member Profile: Amy Coote

When Pat Burke first started talking to me about the Melbourne Women’s Fund in late 2013, I immediately felt excited, inspired and empowered. I am honoured to have been invited to join the Advisory Board of this innovative and impactful initiative and am proud to be a Founding Member.

Although I am somewhat new to philanthropy, I feel like I have finally found my niche. The passion I have developed for giving back to the community and engaging people in philanthropy is incredibly strong. I believe that many people are not aware of how they can make a difference, or feel that they don’t have enough to give to have true impact. We need to work together to help educate our community on the importance of supporting those in need. The Melbourne Women’s Fund is the perfect avenue to achieve this and our collective giving model will ensure that we will make a difference to those groups that we, together, choose to support.

The Melbourne Women’s Fund is committed to building our own community of like-minded women and we will work together to educate, inspire and make a difference for women and their families facing disadvantage. I am excited and proud to be a part of this community and look forward to seeing how we grow and make real impact into the future.

MWF now has over 40 members which is a terrific start for our three month old group! We would love more women to join, especially as we move into our interesting grants research phase when we will look at the many community needs of our women & families and discover wonderful projects we can fund. Next month’s November newsletter will provide more information about this.

We welcome all women who want to learn and become more involved in philanthropy. Come join this growing group of like-minded women and make new friendships as we work together to make a difference for women and families in Melbourne.

MEMBERSHIP is now available by making a monthly contribution through Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, call us or LMCF for details.
