Our Exciting and Inspiring Launch Event

Thank you to the over 100 women who embraced the 21st July launch of our Melbourne Women’s Fund. Our thanks go to Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation for underwriting the launch costs and letting us expand the guest list as RSVP’s poured in! CEO Catherine Brown honoured us by opening the event and speaking about LMCF’s Women in Philanthropy initiative followed by Julie Reilly, CEO of Australian Women Donor’s Network who warmly read our Founding Patron Colleen Willoughby’s wonderful tribute.

Our guest speaker, Susan Alberti AO, was the evening’s highlight with a heartfelt speech that included her personal reasons for the big part that philanthropy plays in her life. Susan completely surprised us by becoming our first Life Member with her cheque for $25,000 — there was hardly a dry eye in the room! Having Susan’s confidence in our mission and goals is truly gratifying. Sue said, “I am delighted to be associated with this group and their pursuit of providing new pathways for women to get involved in supporting our local community.”

We thank you all for the great feedback following the event, for the new Founding Membership sign ups, and for your emails of support and encouragement.

A conversation with Genevieve Timmons

Our first Conversation event will be led by Genevieve Timmons, one of Melbourne’s most experienced Philanthropy Executives, author and Philanthropy Australia Council member (one of her many pro bono board positions).

Genevieve will lead a discussion about why and how we can be savvy givers and guests will also receive a copy of her book “The Art and Science of Philanthropy – Savvy Giving” (published by Hardie Grant) . Ernst and Young are kindly hosting us (at no charge) in one of their boardrooms and catering will be a delicious light luncheon.

Bookings are now open through Eventbrite, and the $50.00 cost includes your luncheon and a copy of Genevieve”s book – which she will also sign for you!

New Member Profile – Sally Hirst

We thought that you would be interested in hearing from some new members about their reasons for joining, here is Sally’s contribution.

My name is Sally Hirst and I’m proud to be a founding member of the Melbourne Women’s Fund. Although I have donated to charities and good causes all my working life, I must admit I haven’t given much thought to what and why I was giving. If something came through the door, or someone asked, then I’d just react.

Things are different now. For a start there are so many causes trying to get my attention and whilst they are all worthwhile I feel hassled into responding, so much so that I just want to say no to them all.

I now want to consider how I contribute. I don’t want to give, or donate; I want to fund. I believe there’s a difference. I want the emphasis to be on specific projects and programs that need support. I want to know more about the problems, to understand the needs and how experts in the field believe these can be met. I want to encourage innovation and new ways of addressing the issues that beset my community.

Melbourne Women’s Fund seems to provide me with that opportunity. I like the idea of joining with others who share the same values and aspirations to find solutions and make a difference. I’m looking forward to your fellowship and inspiration.
